Chamonix Coffee, Davis, CA
[Update, March 2005 - Chamonix recently changed ownership, and it
appears the kiosk has been removed. Chamonix still provides free wireless,
however.]
Members of the Linux Users' Group of Davis donated hardware for a
public access computer (web browsing kiosk) to give to a new coffee shop
in Davis that has been providing free wireless. (Many customers hoped for
Internet access, but didn't have a laptop or network card.)
Marc Hall donated the main PC (motherboard, case, CPU, drives).
Mark Breitung donated additional components (keyboard, mouse, RAM), and
provided a cheap wireless network card. Bill Kendrick installed the OS
and browser, and set the system up as a kiosk. Thanks to Ken Herron,
Mike Egan and others for their help and suggestions.
The system is set up in a corner near the entrance.
Konqueror web browser displaying Chamonix's home page. A pop-up window
appears asking for confirmation to close all browsers and clear cache,
cookies and history.
Notice the wireless card's antenna sticking out of the back of the case.
